2008 Breeding Season Has Started!

In early September, we sit down and devise a breeding plan on paper. This plan highlights the projects we hope to be successful with. In this plan we select a primary and secondary (back up) male for every female we select to breed. As we introduce males we record our breeding season in a journal. In this breeding journal we briefly record,

  1. what male was placed with what female
  2. when he was introduced
  3. did we witness a lock
  4. when he was removed.

Remember to give your males breaks between breedings as they expend a lot of energy and can become stressed. In our first video we stated that we like to start cooling in the beginning of October and will start breeding females that have ceased feeding. By the beginning of November, we start to breed all our females, whether they are still feeding or not. Here is a few photos of our first year trying to produce yellow hypos a.k.a. ghosts. They hit it off quick.
